OUR VALUES - COMMUNITY - Unity
2 Chronicles 29-31
Community needs unity. But in a diverse community what does unity mean?
Unity does not mean that we all have to believe exactly the same things, do the same things and be the same kind of people. Unity with other churches and Christians for us about who it is that binds us together but for us here at St Andrew's it is also about where he is taking us.
In the Old Testament one of the Kings of Judah was Hezekiah. The Bible says of him that 'he did what was right in the eyes of the Lord', unlike most of the other kings before and after him. Hezekiah brought revival to the nation of Judah. He purified the temple, tore down the idols that had been built across the land and brought back the great feasts of the people of God. As part of his reforms he put out a call for people to surrender themselves to the Lord God, to serve only him and to restore the worship of the temple. In 2 Chronicles 30:12 it says "Also in Judah the hand of God was on the people to give them unity of mind to carry out what the king and his officials had ordered, following the word of the LORD."
The Lord gives unity for a purpose. We are the Body of Christ brought together to serve God and to change the world. We can do neither of those things on our own. We are a diverse people for a reason. It is our diversity of personalities and gifts that gives us our strength and our unity that gives us our power.
